Local Students Greatest Contributors for Homeless Outreach Ministries

Daphne, AL (April 4, 2017) – Hundreds of people – primarily students and teachers – in Baldwin and Mobile Counties recently donated gently used shoes to Baldwin Bone & Joint’s 14th Annual Many More Miles Campaign, resulting in 1,910 pairs of shoes finding new life.

Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C., the Port City Pacers, McCoy Outdoor Co., Dr. Glenn Glass, and the University of South Alabama Student Recreation Center partnered to collect shoes for the homeless outreach programs of Wings of Life and Discovery Ministries. The campaign, now in its 14th year, got off to a running start in January and concluded at the Azalea Trail Run held on March 25th.

Students in Mobile and Baldwin Counties were also given the opportunity to collect shoes and earn money for their schools’ PE programs. Students and teachers collectively provided 72% of total shoes collected! Dixon Elementary won first place, collecting 743 pairs of shoes and received a $300 cash prize. Fairhope Intermediate took second place ($200), and Spanish Fort Elementary received third prize ($100).

Giving New Life to Old Shoes for Those in Need

Daphne, AL (January 31, 2017) – You may have put a lot of miles on your old running shoes, but when you donate them to the “Many More Miles” campaign, your shoes will land on the feet of someone who really needs them. For the 14th consecutive year, Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C. will once again host this important community project, partnering with the Port City Pacers, USA Student Recreation Center and McCoy Outdoor Company to collect shoes for the homeless outreach programs of Wings of Life and Discovery Ministries. Response to the campaign has grown since its inception from 200 pairs donated in 2003 to 1899 pairs contributed in 2016. With the kickoff beginning the month of January each year, donations for 2017 are now being accepted with final shoe drop-offs received at the 2017 Azalea Trail Run on Saturday, March 25. Mobile and Baldwin County elementary students will also once again be given the opportunity to collect shoes and earn money for their schools’ P.E. programs. Baldwin Bone & Joint will award cash prizes to the individual P.E. programs for the top three schools donating the most shoes. So clean up those gently used athletic shoes, tie them together in pairs and drop them off at any of the following locations:

“ORTHOPAEDIC UPDATES IN THE CARE OF SHOULDER PAIN”

Daphne, AL (August 4, 2016) – Doctors John L. Todd and Andrew Harcourt, Orthopaedic Specialists with Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C., along with Rachael Hartman, DPT, Director of PT Services, will provide a continuing education program especially designed for nurses, case managers and physical therapists on Thursday, August 25th. The program entitled “Orthopaedic Updates in the Care of Shoulder Pain” will be held in the Community Room of the Thomas Medical Center. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for registration and dinner, followed by presentations from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

 Dr. John Todd, Medical Director of The Shoulder Center at Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who is fellowship trained in both shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. His talk is entitled, The Rotator Cuff: Large Tears and Failed Repairs – Options for Treatment He will review the epidemiology of rotator cuff tears; current concepts for a successful rotator cuff repair; recognize possible causes linked for failure of rotator cuff repairs; review strategies for successful revision rotator cuff repairs; and discuss options for patients with ‘un-repairable’ rotator cuff tears. Dr. Andrew Harcourt is board certified in Family Practice and fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine. His talk is entitled, “Shoulder Diagnostics and Ortho-Biologics in the Management of Chronic Shoulder Pain.” He will discuss different imaging modalities for the shoulder, including X-ray, MRI, and Ultrasound; the unique benefits of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound when caring for the individual with chronic shoulder pain; and the role that ortho-biologics plays in the current management of chronic shoulder pain. Rachael Hartman, DPT, Director of PT Services, has a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and a B.S. degree in Exercise Science from Auburn University. Her talk is entitled, “Non-Operative and Post-Operative Physical Therapy for Common Shoulder Pathologies,” whereby she will review the anatomy of the shoulder, discuss the concept of mobility vs. stability in shoulder joint, list common shoulder pathologies referred for with physical therapy, and describe the differences between non-operative and post-operative treatment approaches in physical therapy in common shoulder pathologies. All nurses attending must scan their license.

Baldwin Bone & Joint, P.C., Mobile and Baldwin County YMCA branches, the Port City Pacers, McCoy Outdoor Co., Dr. Glenn Glass, and the USA Student Recreation Center partnered to collect shoes for the homeless outreach programs of Wings of Life and Discovery Ministries. The campaign, now in its 13th year, got off to a running start in January and concluded at the Azalea Trail Run held on March 19th. Students in Mobile and Baldwin Counties were also given the opportunity to collect shoes and earn money for their schools’ PE programs. Dixon Elementary won first place, collecting 804 pairs of shoes and received a $300 prize. Fairhope Intermediate took second place, and Spanish Fort Elementary received third prize. Used running shoes may be donated year-round at McCoy Outdoor Co. on Springhill Avenue in Mobile.
